A piano is unlike anything else you will ever need to move. It is one of the heaviest, most awkward, and most valuable items in any home — and one of the most unforgiving when handled incorrectly. A piano dropped, tipped, or moved without proper support can suffer catastrophic structural damage. And that’s before accounting for the risk to your floors, your walls, and the people doing the moving.
At Straight Paths Moving, piano moving is treated with the level of seriousness it demands. Proper equipment, experienced crew, and a plan before anyone touches the instrument.
No other piece of furniture or equipment combines the weight, fragility, and value of a piano:
Straight Paths Moving handles all types of residential and commercial furniture, including:
Stairs, High-Rises, and Tight Spaces
Piano moves involving stairs are among the most technically demanding moves in the industry. Whether it’s getting an upright down a narrow staircase or maneuvering a baby grand through a doorway with inches to spare, our crew approaches every obstacle with a clear plan and the right equipment — never force.
Assessment: Before moving day, we confirm the piano type, its size and weight, the layout of your home, and the route it will travel — including any stairwells, doorways, or tight corners that require special planning.
Equipment: We use specialized piano dollies, heavy-duty straps, and padded piano boards designed specifically for the weight and shape of the instrument. Standard moving equipment is not sufficient for a piano move.
Wrapping and Protection: The piano is fully wrapped in moving blankets and secured before it moves. Keys, pedals, and the lid are protected throughout.
Safe Maneuvering: Grand and baby grand pianos are carefully tilted and placed on a piano board by an experienced crew. Upright pianos are secured upright on a piano dolly. Every turn, threshold, and staircase is navigated deliberately and carefully.
Climate-Conscious Transport: Pianos are sensitive to temperature and humidity changes. We transport your instrument in a way that minimizes exposure to conditions that can affect tuning and internal components.
Placement: We position the piano exactly where you want it in the new space and ensure it is stable and level before we leave. We recommend scheduling a tuning appointment after the move, as pianos typically need time to acclimate to their new environment before being tuned.
Even a perfectly executed piano move will affect the instrument’s tuning. This is normal — pianos are sensitive to changes in environment, humidity, and temperature, and most need time to settle into their new space before a tuning will hold. We recommend waiting two to four weeks after the move before scheduling a tuning appointment
